About Event
A temporary crown is an essential step in the fabrication process of fixed prosthetic restorations. It serves as a provisional crown restoration used during the creation of the definitive crown or bridge. Therefore, several considerations and requirements must be met when making a temporary crown, including biological, aesthetic, and mechanical aspects.
The biological requirement is crucial because the temporary crown protects the tooth structure after the preparation process. During tooth preparation, dentinal tubules are cut and exposed, causing nerve irritation and resulting in tooth sensitivity. The temporary crown functions to maintain tooth position/inclination and contact points affected by proximal reduction. Similarly, in the incisal/occlusal region, it prevents unwanted space changes due to tooth reduction. One of its key benefits is preserving the occlusal clearance, ensuring that the opposing tooth does not extrude before the definitive crown or bridge is placed.
A temporary crown must also meet aesthetic requirements, meaning its color should blend harmoniously with adjacent teeth. It can also serve as an initial reference for patients regarding the shade of their final restoration. Additionally, temporary crowns are useful in cases involving changes in tooth shape or position, providing pre-preparation insights. In some cases, a wax-up or mock-up model can be used for simulation on a study model.
Another crucial requirement is mechanical strength. The temporary crown must withstand masticatory forces and remain durable for a sufficient period. Temporary crowns can be fabricated using either the direct or indirect method, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.
